Kazuo Yairi, born in 1932, was a prominent Japanese craftsman in the realm of classical guitar crafting. His journey began under the tutelage of his father, Gi’ichi Yairi, an accomplished luthier, in the serene mountains near Nagoya. At the age of 18, he embarked on his independent venture, establishing a workshop dedicated exclusively to crafting classical guitars. This venture grew as he was later joined by his three younger brothers, along with a team of 20 artisans, at the rural Yairi factory situated in Kani village. Their expertise extended to producing lutes, vihuelas, classical guitars, and dreadnought steel string guitars.
 
During the 1960s, Kazuo Yairi formed a partnership with St Louis Music, an American distribution and manufacturing entity. This collaboration paved the way for the creation of the Alvarez Yairi acoustic guitar line. In 1965, he assumed leadership of his father's enterprise and progressively expanded production capabilities. Seeking to broaden his skills, he ventured to the United States to study steel string guitar craftsmanship, subsequently establishing the Yairi Guitar Factory. This marked the inception of his endeavor to export meticulously handcrafted acoustic and classical guitars worldwide.
 
Kazuo Yairi's instruments garnered attention from renowned musicians such as Paul McCartney and Carlos Santana. Despite his staunch commitment to traditional artisanal techniques and his reliance on manual tools, Yairi was also an innovator. His introduction of the K. Yairi "Direct Coupled Bridge" significantly contributed to the distinctive responsive quality of his instruments. Furthermore, he incorporated unique mahogany dovetail neck joints and an open-pore finish on the back and sides of his creations.
